\nSEPTEMBER

\n

I return to Slippery Rock.
\nI veer off Main Street and drive up a hill
\nto a building with pillars called Sentinel.
\nI move all of my stuff into my one room flat
\ntime to finish college with a bonus semester.<\/p>\n

I still feel transient\u2014like I\u2019ve been jettisoned back
\ninto the center of the storm\u2014only to be spit out by
\nan imaginary blue whale to the other side of my life,
\nto a new season I never really imagined myself living in.
\nMaybe I forgot to pull myself out of the washing machine.<\/p>\n

Is this new space my home or just a temporary dwelling?
\nI hang up my blue striped curtain over the white blinds.
\nI set up my computer on a desk with a cherry wood finish.
\nI plug in the TV I rescued from that pawn shop in Florida.
\nI open and shut the white cupboard doors above my bed.<\/p>\n

I think about all the dead leaves and how they
\nwere blown off branches by the summer wind.
\nThey pile up at the bottom of your swimming pool
\n\u2014fast asleep in the cool water of some September.
\nWhen it\u2019s quiet I think about who hears me.<\/p>\n

Will I ever awake into a September
\nwhere sunlight belongs in my story?
\nWill I ever evolve into an actualized version of myself
\nthat\u2019s confident enough to know where to go next?
\nThen again\u2014that\u2014probably wouldn\u2019t be me\u2014now would it?<\/p>\n
